MIL-DTL-24643/16 LSTSGU Shipboard Cable Description

Mil-Spec Military part number MIL-DTL-24643/16 has one cable-type designation: LSTSGU. The cable is rated for 1000 volts and uses Standard Identification Code by Method 1 or 3, or Letter Identification Code applied by Method 5.

M24643/16 LSTSGU shipboard cable is a low-smoke, zero-halogen shipboard cable suitable for watertight and non-flexing service. This Mil-Spec cable features three stranded bare copper conductors and an LSZH cross-linked Polyolefin jacket(XLPO). Sizes 7 AWG and smaller feature Silicone Rubber/Glass Braid/Braid covering insulation. Sizes 3 AWG and larger feature Silicone Rubber Glass Tape insulation. This cable is suitable for use in power supply, lighting, and weapon control system applications that do not exceed 1000V, they operate within a temperature range of -20°C to +105°C. The Mil-DTL-24643 Mil-Spec covers cables suitable for use in power supply, lighting, control, communications, instrumentation, and electronic applications.

What does the LSTSGU mean?

In the cable designation for LSTSGU, the letters LS refer to low smoke and halogen-free cable. T refers to three conductors, SG refers to silicone and glass insulation, and U refers to the fact that the cable is unarmored.

M24643/16 LSTSGU Shipboard Cable Features and Benefits:

  • Watertight cables can operate in a wide variety of situations, including through bulkheads and between decks.
  • Thermoset insulation is ideal for settings where durability and stiffness are essential
  • LSZH jacket is fire resistant and emits low smoke, which is ideal for shipboard settings which often have restricted ventilation
  • LSZH jackets also emit low acid, gas, and toxicity when subjected to fire, maintaining circuit integrity
  • Silicone/glass insulation is prized for numerous reasons. First of all, it has greater moisture resistance which reduces the rate of failure that can occur due to excessive moisture condensation in some vessels.
  • Silicone/glass insulation is also highly resistant to fire, and if burned, will generate significantly less smoke and corrosive or toxic gases than other insulation materials.
  • Meets the 1-hour fire electrical circuit integrity requirements.
